John: The Winkler catalog (I think) has several upgrades for transmission reliability, mostly for putting TDI's in Vanagons. Notable are a couple of South African parts like an oil diverter that channels oil onto a gear or bearing. These are all 5 speed 094 transmissions (which are de rigeur in Germany). Also are ring and pinions in very high ratios getting down to low 3.xx's to one. I'm sure there is some pool of knowledge out there. Too bad Winkler is hard to get and expensive in this country.
