Alistair, very cool stuff!!! From the write-up and pics, the problem of engaging a bigger engine to the transmission is being addressed. With that difficulty out of the way, the next thing in my mind is the strength of the other components - gear shafts, teeth, bearings, etc. I wonder thow they hold up. I know that someone once installed a Chevy V-6 into a Vanagon, and it was a good installation, performed well, but it had constant transmission problems, like in having to be replaced often. This was partly due to driving habits, but part due to the heavier load placed on parts by the higher torque. Just curious.
