Aha! I was thinking in of my American car- as in how an old PCV valve might allow excess oil into the airfilter container... comparing VeeDubs to Oldsmobile?!? That was my first mistake... Thanks Jim! mike

It is normal for some oil to be in that tube. It is to take hot oil vapors and send them to be burned rather than just released into the atmosphere. An unusually high amount can possibly mean rings are getting worn or oil is getting too hot.
