I highly recommend the Lonely Planet's Calif ISBN: 1864503319 (or Lonely Planet's Southwest) book , try amazon.com or your local book store. This/these book(s) will answer all of the questions that you pose. I use read these books, mark a map, and my trip plans itself. Malcolm
