Chuck, I played around with my car stereo for a while now and this is what I have learned: 4 " speakers cannot reproduce reasonable base. So you need something bigger to get decent sound. I tried 6x9" speakers in the front doors, but that was not a good idea. There is no way to make the front doors stiff enough for base under 100 Hz and I could not find a way to stop the doors from making rattling noises at certain frequencies, which is VERY annoying. For the base I settled for a mono subwoofer under the rear bench, JL Audio 10W0, in a custom enclosure. It is easier to keep the rear bench from rattling. The woofer is driven by a MTX TA 311D amplifier. Max power is 200 W RMS nominal but it has actually 283 W, MTX always underrates their amps. In the front I have a component system JL audio XR650-CSi, with 6.5 " mids and tweeters that can be swiveled and rotated. The crossover to the sub is set at 85 Hz, so the doors are quiet now. The JL's are pretty high end speakers, and if you want to hear the difference, you need to mount them right. The 6.5" are low in the door. The key is they are mounted on a rigid particle board which is shaped to fit inside the door and provide an even mounting surface. Also important is to have no openings around the speaker and damp the door panels with QPads or brown bread or similar. The component speakers have separate crossovers mounted behind the glove box. The tweeters need to be higher up, or your music will seem to come from your feet. I put them into the stock speaker positions, actually in the stock speakers, after dremeling all the old stuff out. This takes a few days to complete. If you don't want to spend the time, though, there is no point in spending the money for top speakers like JL ausio or MB quarts, because they are going to sound no better than much cheaper speakers if not properly mounted. My headset is pretty simple, a Sony CDX-CA810X. I bought it, because it has a decent equalizer (7 band) and fits easily. It has problems with shocks, though. Bumps in the road sometimes kill the music for a few seconds. Oh, and some rear speakers to fill in the frequency response top it off. If you like I can post a few photos of the job. Have fun, Reinhard, 83 Westy, "Moose" --- Chuck Reisinger <chuckphoto@EARTHLINK.NET> wrote:
