Subject:      Shift lever slop & selector shaft lubrication

I have a fair amount of left-right play in
my shift lever.  ('87 Westy)  I've gone through
all the linkages and the play is there because
the frontmost bushing allows the whole shaft
to move left and right instead of rotate the
way it's supposed to.  If you have your ETKA
handy, the fulcrum of the bad movement is item
8 on drawing 69-20.  So, for instance, when
the shifter's universal joint should be
rotating, it is moving left and right.

How do I get rid of this play?  Since item 8
is a single bushing, it can't eliminate the
left-right motion.  Is there something else
that's supposed to do that?


I also have very stiff forward-backward motion
unless I put some oil on the rearmost bushing,
near the transmission.  This lasts for a few
days then things go bad again.  Looking again
at drawing 69-20, are there supposed
to be some protective boots (items 2a) that keep
the grease in and the dirt out?  My van has no
boots around this bushing.  Are all your boots
disintegrated too?  Is my shifter inadequate?
What should I DO?  (calm, calm, no panic...)
