The only electrical problem we've had with our 2001 (B5.5) Passat wagon is that one of the coil packs died. The dealer replaced all four without raising an eyebrow about it. (Sonnen, in San Rafael, CA. There *are* good VW dealers!...). My wife surprised them by knowing what the problem was. She did because I had just found a lot of threads on this problem while looking for a Westy Syncro.(Vg content)

The Passat has electric windows, locks, etc., but no power seats, and has a1.8t with a M5 gearbox (YES!!!) 36K Mi. on it. Check to see if these motors need expensive timing belt or chain replacements, and if so has it been done yet. My daughter's Audi 2.8Q 6 will need a 75Kmi belt replacement according to schedule, and while in there it is wise to replace idlers, water pump and some other stuff, ~$1300 for the deal. But damn, that is one fun car to drive!!! Dang near as good as a Vanagon!!

Hello all, Unfourtunately the time has come to sell my beloved Ell (84 Tiico Westy) She needs a good home. but thats another email! I am looking at a 2000 Passat V6 wagon with 100k on it as a possible replacement, as well as a 1999 Volvo V70 with 110k on it. Could anyone inform me of any reliability issues with either of the cars? I saw someone mentioned "electrical hiccups" with the Passat? Cheers, Wes
