I finally got rid of my 1991 passat wagon, 16v automatic. The passat was a terrible car, but that's another story. I wanted another station wagon as the replacement, there are not many choices in north America in that format. I was also looking for a low priced used car. I took a look at the B4 platform passat, 1995 - 1998(?) and decided against it. I ended up with a 1995 Volvo 850 turbo wagon, 5 speed. The 850 is substantially the same as the V70. For cars of that generation, I came to the conclusion that the Volvo is a better car than the passat. I don't know about current models. Among other things, the Volvo has 50 more HP and better gas mileage.
