You could be right Jim...

If you go to the Commercial vehicle section of the Australian Volkswagen
site...

...and click on "Transporter" over to the left, you can download a pdf
about the T5.
There it talks about a joystick gear selector so it probably is as you
describe...

Anybody know if this would be an electronic shifter?  I know of two
other standards set up like that and both are electronic shift by wire
to an actuator box on the transmission.
