Peter, Check in the archives under "Vanagon Syndrome". There tons of posts on this problem. Before you run out and start buying AFM's, harness patches, idle controllers, ECU, and tantalum resistors, look at the basic stuff first. Very frequently, the ECU is fooled into changing your air/fuel ratios by a leaky exhaust or a vacuum leak. Example would be a leaky exhaust. The oxygen sensor may read a lean condition when some of the exhaust gasses are bypassing hte sensor. You can find vacuum leaks by spraying carb cleaner around the suspect areas while the problem is happening. It it goes away during a spraying session, look in that area for a leak. That is not to say you have none of the typical causes present. It's just much cheaper to start with the free stuff. Find things like leaks and broken wires.
