I'm convinced now of the 3/4 slider. Thanks to those who knew right off the bat, and thanks to those who held out hope for something cheaper. I appreciate it.

I took the van around the block and made sure the final bit of the trip occurred downhill. Sure enough it stuck in 4th... I coasted the rest of the way and into the parking space. When I did, the van rolled back a tad while I reached for the brake. After rolling backwards it shifted into 3rd just fine. That yells transmission to me, so I'm checking around for the best labor prices around here.

My question though is this... used or rebuild? And are there any "new" transmissions for these things anymore? My dilemma isn't new I'm sure. My van has a rebuilt 1.9l plus everything else important. And that makes me really want a rebuilt transmission, then maybe the thing can be on the road for another 20 years! (doubtful but hey) But cost of rebuild is a good bit more than just a swap. I think I can find a used transmission for about the cost of the 3/4 slider alone and the labor for swapping the tranny is currently around $400 at my local shop.

Any thoughts? I know I won't have my van forever, but I do have a lot more I want to do it and haven't had the chance to yet. Cross country trips, lots of camping, and more. You know what I mean.

Many thanks, Chris in Nashville 85 GL (currently limping)
