Depending on the material the seal is made out of, it may have been a case
of shelf rot.  I have seen many rubber parts become dry and brittle after
years of sitting on shelves.   That is one reason I am leery of old stuff
found on shelves.  Properly stored rubber lasts forever but not if
improperly stored.
