The brownish, crumbling debris is definitely that stupid steel spring clamp rusted out to nothing. What an awful job to pull out the bits & pieces and clean it up. Be very careful not to cut the black rubber seal. You can use a good caulk or something like Goop to reattach & seal it so that no moisture ever gets between the seal and the poptop. Mine's been successfully resealed for about 15 years now. Dennis Patterson '84 Westy
