Personally I would try other more simple methods before cutting the door.

Why not try first to hang a piece of heavy plastic that you can lift to
access your stuff. Much like they have in the supermarket coolers. You can
even cut a couple of vertical slits in the plastic to allow you to reach in.
Weight it at the bottom with plastic doweling cut from a coat hanger. A
little duct tape at the top to glue it into place, or some of those 1 inch
square Velcro items you buy at a yardage shop to keep plastic in place?

Personally I would not mess with cutting the door.
