Christian,
there is a lot of confusion about this topic. We had a
thread on this a few weeks ago.
Just a few thoughts:
a)Dynamat is not a sound barrier but rather dampening
material. Good for increasing stiffness especially in
areas where you put in speakers. But wood enclosures
are better IMHO.
b)Dynamant is WAY overpriced, google brown bread or
QPads and you get away with less money spent.
c)No point in putting dampeners in areas that are
already stiff. Just weighs you down. I see a lot of
pics on the web of people who have literally plastered
every accessible area with it. Looks nice and shiny,
but doesn't make sense. If it doesn't "ring" when you
knock on it, it doesn't need dampening.
d) Heat insulation? Dynamat doesn't help. Most of the
heat loss in a vanagon is through heat conduction.
There is lot's of bare metal visible inside a vanagon
and this is connected to the outside (not unlike a
heatsink on a CPU). Just ask a few winter campers
where they get all the condensation.
e) Stuffing the spaces behind the panels with PU open
cell foam might be a good idea to reduce noise levels
(also broken fibers from the stock insulation are
probably not healthy for your lungs). Has certainly
worked well on my rear hatch. Doors and hatch in a
vanagon are well vented, with just the flimsy panels
between the interior and the ouside noise. In case of
the rear hatch there is the tail pipe not far away...
f) Depending on what climate you live in, you'll need
to keep some venting in the doors and hatch. Otherwise
you get condensation, mold and rust. Vanagon window
seals do not prevent water from getting inside of the
doors during rain. BTW another reason to keep your
speakers enclosed.
My bottom line: A good idea if you know how it works
and how to apply it. But don't expect miracles.
Have fun,
Reinhard
