Chuck,

I have been using a Garmin Etrex Legend for about 3 years now. It has the ability to store maps, interface w/laptop map programs, etc. Its about $200 at places like Best Buy and Amazon.com. You can get a map CD for the US, I've also bought the maps for Germany and have used it there. There is a new Legend which has a color screen...and its about $75 to $100 more.
