OK, as long as we're going back pre-vanagon, here's mine: a horse. It is difficult to get a horse to step into a bus, but the real problem is when it bites the hell out of your shoulder ever time you turn the wheel to change directions. Back in those days the single rubber mat on the floor made cleanup with a hose very easy.
