You can safely run it up to red line. that's what it's there for. As far as wearing it out prematurely, wear/ rpm is probably on a curve very similar to hp/ mph. IOW, 3000 rpm is fine, 4000, a tiny bit more wear, 4500, slightly more, 5000, quite a bit more, 5500, severe wear, 6000- oh, hell, it won't pull 6000 in 4th, will it? As far as the rusted metal tubes, have you considered the repair kits offered by Terry Kay? It seems like that would be a very good fix. The plastic ones have their own types of failures, and believe me changing them is a real bear of a job. Al Brase
