FWIW I have been driving my 91 syncro westy WITHOUT the power steering since 1997. This is very nice on the highway, but a bit stiff at slower speeds, but I find that if the wheels are rolling even slightly, turning the wheel is not too bad, for me anyway. I have had no cause to put the powersteering in.
