This thread reminds me of a vanagon I dismantled. The mirror had a real winner working on them. This guy took the time to drill several holes thru the very bottom of the plastic and into the ball to hold the mirror in place. He then inserted a few screws as hard and deep as he could, causing several of them to break off. It took me several hours to undo all his damage, and maybe 1/2 hour to get the mirror working correctly.
