I liked the AC in the front of my 84 much better than the configuration of the AC in the later models. Those "tunnels" up the side of rear cargo space above the engine bay took up lots of storage space, and the tunnel down the center of the van was much more in the way than the front unit ever was.

One of the first things I took out of my 84 vanagon when I started stripping it was the AC system which I will put in one of my vans. As Kim noted, that plastic is quite brittle feeling now, but so does the AC housing from an 87. All of this is quite prone to cracking.

The old system worked great and kept the van very cold. Of course, the van took quite a power hit when the compressor kicked in since it was a 1.9l WBX.
