We use a french press to make coffee on the road. We do grind the beans (coarsely) just before leaving for our trip. In my opinion, nothing can touch the flavor of coffee made in a french press. An automatic drip coffee maker simply can't compare to a french press in terms of making a good cup of coffee, no matter when the beans were ground. And a french press is perfectly suited to camping since all you need to do is boil water and pour it in. You can get them in various sizes from single-cup to 1 liter or more.
