The fluid was below the minimum mark and was making a sucking noise while the engine was running (tells me that the pump is ok, I think). after i parked the van in the garage, i noticed a large spot on the ground around where the steering rack would be. it was dark out by then and didnt feel like crawiling under the van.

rusted ps tubing, or PS rack blow a seal.

You don't until you fix the other leak. Driving home
ther is a good chance you killed the pump running low on fluid.

good chance. This puts max presure in the system.

First things frist. Get everything in your vehicle that is not engine
related
fixxed first, before you go for a engine swap. This will clearly
determine the
worthyness of a new engine. To much to fix you should look for a new
vehcile.
