You have uncovered yet another VW Vanagon Mystery ! I have noticed this over the years and have NEVER been able to come up with any reasons ! That switch must fit other applications and they must keep changing it around for that purpose yet still keeping it Vanagon compatible is the only reasoning I've been able to come up with. I did run into one case on a '91 US model I "think" that the M switch would not work on. The connector required another pin or a pin or two were in different orientation. I forget the whole story now but it was the one and only time I could not use the standard M switches I get from my supplier.
