Subject: Climate Control Help
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Hi,

So after my last post about the missing mystery knob below the climate control panel on my 1980 Vanagon I had come to the conclusion that the knob goes to the auxilliary heater. After pushing and turning the little metal prong I got no response, even with engine running. I poped out the ash tray to look at the wires and noticed they were all neatly cut and zip-tied together. I found this weird. I couldn't find the other cut ends of the wires and didn't even no where to begin to start finding them.

Here's the weird thing. My van was not equiped with AC at all originally. After talking with another vanagon owner something was pointed out to me. In the spot in the dash where the radio is factory installed my van has 2 aftermarket air vents. With the ashtray popped I can see the vent hoses leading to some sort of aftermarket unit located where my glovebox should be. (I always wondered why my van never had a glovebox, its because this aftermarket unit whether it be an auxilliary heater or an AC unit is cosmetically hidden in the spot where the dash is)

Does anyone know what this mystery unit could be. I don't even know if my van was ever even equipped with and auxilliary heater, thats what makes me wonder if this is some sort of AC unit that was just never completely installed??? If my van had an auxilliary heater where would it be? I can't seem to figure out any thing with the climate control, and since this all seems to be aftermarket the manuals aren't helping.

Thanks, Kellen 1980 Vanagon Tempe, AZ
