IF tire tread separation is not causing the vibration, you may want to check the rear wheel bearings themselves, both inner and outer. Although not common, pitted balls/rollers/races of the bearings can be a cause of the vibration you describe, dependent on the speed of which the vibration occurs.

BTDT with a 73 Panel Bus which uses the same rear bearings and seals as the Vanagon (Bad outer roller bearing in my case).
