I spent a couple weeks in and around Rio and the east coast beaches abt 5 yrs ago and never saw a Vanagon at all...Not a one...Just a whole bunch of old White 70's busses...Drum brakes, upright engines in either PU or 7 pass style...Most filled with worker bees or family type groups and most in pretty marginal shape at that. (((but every hovel had a satelite dish though))) lots of old type 3 and Golf- Jetta looking cars with various badges...polo, saviero, etc. Rented a good old fashioned dune buggy to roam in.. kind of cool in a retro sort of way, but I was glad to get home and out of the 3rd world and have a good steak. I am told that the price is very high and the paperwork is very tricky.
