One never knows what that hiway will present. I have made it on the ALCAN several times with out as much a a leaky tire. But I have also blown out 5 tires enroute from Dawson Creek to Anchorage - just one way.

So, start with really good tires on the ground, and two spares.

AS for the rest of the country - Lower 48 - prol'ly normal tire arrangement is good enough, unless you do a good bit of back-roading. Then you might adopt the Alaska Hiway strategy. I saw some rough back country when living in New Mexico. I know in other states there are some like NM.
