I carry and use cables. Yesterday in fact. Cables are just fine if you pay attention to the surface you're driving on and the speed that you're driving. If the road ain't white, take 'em off. If you're going faster than 30 mph, they'll take themselves off. I use cables over chains because I need them rarely and they pop on or off in five minutes. Jim (in Union, OR. 8" of nice powder yesterday. Needed the cables in town. Sometimes the studs aren't enough.)
