"blue stuff" is the blue non-phosphate coolant from the VW dealership made by Pentosin. Really, any nitrate, amine, and phosphate free coolant is probably fine, but a lot of folks are paranoid and spend the extra money on the blue stuff, just to be sure. I prefer it because it comes in 1.5 liter concentrated bottles that fit under the seat better than 1 gallon pre-mix bottles.
