The speedo comes right out of the cluster. You could just put your early cable style speedo into the later AC cluster to get your analog clock

A better choice might be to use a watercooled cluster so you can have the factory temp gauge for your now watercooled 80 camper. The clock style watercooled clusters have very low monetary value since any people remove them to install a tach style cluster. The tach style clusters still have clocks, just small digital ones.

Putting a diesel tach into an AC cluster would be the hardest way to go. The fuel gauge won't connect properly to the AC foil, as won't the temp gauge or tach. Use a Gold/Jetta/Quantum diesel tach in a waterboxer tach cluster instead. You could still use the old speedo in it.
