The effect was fine with the bug and did have a noticable performance change. However when they were added to a bay bus with the older 1600 engine they had no effect at all. I would say that with the even heavier mass of the vanagon that the effect would also be nil except that there is a higher wear associated with their use on the valve train.

For the vanagon you would be better off with big valve heads and a proper cam for them.
