As alternative to wiring something in when the sliding door is open you might consider putting in a lighting fixture right above the sliding door that you can just reach up and turn on. Home Depot has a nice flourescent fixture that runs on batteries (the fixture is nice, the bulb should be swapped to something other than that dim blue.) Nice simple and no wires to run.
