I posted this on the diesel vanagon site but for some reason I donıt get nearly as much help there as I do here, so Iım posting it here as well.

Iım finally investigating the starting problems on my 83 vanagon 1.6 diesel after receiving many helpful replies from folks. I turned the key on and checked the connection at the glow plugs for power and got nothing. Followed the red lead back to the little electrical junction box in the back of the engine compartment and near as I can tell, the red lead runs into the bottom of the relay. I checked the inline fuse which seemed fine, so Iım assuming itıs the relay. I also checked the other red leads in the box and they are all hot which leads me to believe that Iım getting 12v into the box, but not out to the glow plugs. First off, wondering if I am correct on this?

Secondly, wondering if anyone has any thoughts on getting the relay out. Doesnıt seem like there is enough clearance on top to pull it out. Any tricks or just wiggle/waggle it till it pops?

Finally, do relays just go bad on there own sometimes? Any way to check them?

Thanks

Dave

P.S. I looked on line for a new relay and saw two types, slow and fast. I donıt know what type of glow plugs are in the van, so am I better off going with the slow relay? Will this hurt my plugs if I have ³fast² plugs?

.
