Hi gang...

I'm looking to understand what the original engine/trans would have been on my diesel Westie...I believe both have been changed by the PO...he got less than 1500 miles out of the $3400 used engine...the bill had a $65 welding charge for the oil pump, so I'll be looking for one of those for sure...

#1. I have a 5 speed in mine...all I've ever seen is 4 speeds...is there any physical visual differences between the 4 & 5 speed trannies...I've never seen them side by each...

#2. I have availability of two engines to put into this rig...an 86 TD, and a 92 non TD...I'm wondering if the original block was TD or non TD...I know the TDs I've had apart in the past were cast with TD1.6(or something similar) on the block at the back, and there were oil squirters in the gallery that shoot oil up on the bottom of the pistons to keep them cool(I think this would be a good thing in a Bus)....I've also been told the early TD is too large a turbo/manifold package to install in a Vanagon without "reworking" the body, so I'm thinking of swapping the TD bottom end putting the non turbo top end on....does this sound workable?

I'm open to input from any quarter.....$.02 Canadian...

Thanks, Den.
