is your radio a stock vw radio? the stock one that came in your van originally? anyway i highly doubt its wiring for a diff lock, as syncros wont sold in the US in 88, and half of the syncros didnt even have diff locks.. (not to mention your van isnt a syncro anyway LOL :<) can u send a pic of it to me?does it look like the other plugs for your radio? how many wires are coming out of it? do you have a GL or a wolfsburg? on the 89 wolfsburgs, they had extra wiring for the factory subwoofer that was installed in the left side table panel... but that was 89 wolfsburg only..
