Bearing don't knock Dave, they make a "hisssing" sound... and VW bearing are extremely good... something got to be good on a Vanagon, he he.

Like someone stated, lift the wheel and turn it by hand, listen for noise...you should here something...but even if you know which side, it is dificult to know if it's the inner or outter one's

REMEMBER THE following: Noise = CV replacement, not necessarily all 4 but for sure one is cooked!!! now, which one is the question!!!

Now, most CV's with noise or clunk noise need replacement, by cleaning those you will be able to see which one is damage...or the most damage. http://www.benplace.com/images_westfalia/inspection_joint.jpg

I did over 15 CV job in the past 2 years.... remember the following, First, cleaning those it's a messy job and time consuming... but not dificult at all. When the CV are out of the shaft, check those one by one for play...this is where you decide if you gonna put some new unit and wcich one.

Here is my 2 complete section on CV's http://www.benplace.com/cv_boot_anatomy.htm http://www.benplace.com/cv_joint_maintenance.htm

Average result in swaping the CV's..... pretty good, here is a picture of what everybody else is trying to explain... http://www.benplace.com/cv_joint_swap.htm
