Stop fretting with this thing and get a new one. I jumped through all kinds of hoops with mine. Did a coulple of fixes inside. Dinally gave up. Bought a new one. I've been real happy ever since.

The one thing that causes the odometer to fail is a drive wheel that begines to slip on the shaft. This is cause by resetting the Odometer to zero while the vehicle is in motion. A real weakness, and the cause of failures in untold numbers of Vanagons. Avoid that and a new one will last a long time.

I got mine from Camelback VW in Tucson. If you live out of state they will give you a break on price, especially if you tell them you belong to this list and got your referral to them from the list. Parts Dept. is 800-279-8149
