NO! The diesel Vanagons do pretty well at around 30 mpg in stock form. They are painfully slow with a stock horespower rating of less than 50 hp. Plenty of people upgrade them to larger VW diesel engines and VW turbo diesel engines as well. This along with gearing changes allows the diesel Vanagon to cruise comfortably at 65-70 mph but the fuel economy goes down as the speed goes up.
