This is an improvement. I did it once on a dreary Sunday night and it worked well. The fastener I used might have been a drain plug from an R-bike, but it had a hex head and the right thread. I wasted away the threads adjacent to the head to form an o-ring groove. I also through drilled it and installed a 1/16-NPT truck valve because I figured that the threads in the plastic of the heater core would eventually queef out if I ran that steel bleeder plug in and out too often.
