Subject: refilling tranny fluid - correction
Content-type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii

Let me begin by saying that I am a newbie mechanic. I'm doing my own work (and during the past year I've done quite a bit) but I've only come inches on a journey of many, many miles.

That being said, I would like to correct my previous post regarding the refilling of the tranny with new gear oil. I stated that the 091 took 3.2 US quarts, and that the 091/1 took 3.7 US quarts. That is absolutely the opposite. According to my Bentley, the 091 takes 3.7 quarts and the 091/1 takes 3.2. I really do not know the difference in these transmissions. I only know that mine is an 091 (at least that is what it says on the endcap) and that it takes 3.7 US quarts of gear oil.

Somewhat consistent with this, my Haynes manual says that "on 4-speed 091 gearboxes the oil level should be to the bottom of the plug hole. On all other gearboxes, the level should be approximately 15mm below the bottom edge of the hole."

Since I have my tranny out, and I know for a fact that it is totally empty, I am going to level it up on my workbench and put exactly 3.7 U.S. quarts of Redline MT90 in it or stop at the bottom of the gear hole, whichever comes first.

Thanks for all of the corrections and comments.

"The old fellow's fury was awful. He sprang to his feet, drew and opened a sailor's clasp-knife, and balancing it open on the palm of his hand, threatened to pin the doctor to the wall. The doctor never so much as moved. He spoke to him as before, over his shoulder and in the same tone of voice, rather high, so that all the room might hear, but perfectly calm and steady: ' If you do not put that knife this instant in your pocket, I promise, upon my honour, you shall hang at the next assizes.'"
