On early Split and Bay busses up to 79 the engines need to be pulled to replace the heads. On Vanagons you can replace the heads and replace the rod bearings with the engine in the van. Oh! My aching back! I've done several Air Cooled Vanagon head replacements without removing the engines. If you've got to pull both heads it's just better to pull the engine on a Vanagon.
