That sounds very similar to what our 87 Westy Syncro did one morning in October, including the prior rainy days. Unfortunately I can't help you with the diagnosis, ours died on the way to work that morning and I have not even attempted to fix it yet(I know, shame on me), too busy, and its parked for the winter. I am looking forward to seeing the responses that you receive as I may try to work on our van over the holidays.
