Subject: ATF amount in autotrans?

OK, now I'm confused (yeah well, that's easily done). I am planning on changing the transmission fluids, both ATF and final drive in the new (to me) '88 GL. I plan to change the transmission filter (strainer) at the same time, to help get as much of the old ATF out and because I don't know when (or if) it was changed.

I will be refilling with Red Line fluids, they recommend Synthetic D4 ATF and Synthetic 75W90 gear oil. My problem is knowing how much ATF I will need. Bentley manual says 2.6 quarts in the auto transmission chapter - BUT - on the back of the manual, it says 3.2 quarts for drain/refill and 6.4! quarts for a dry transmission. Can anyone who has done the filter replacement give me a ballpark amount on the fluid I will need? 3 quarts, 4 quarts or 7 quarts? I assume it would be either 3 or 4 quarts, as I will not be draining the torque converter, but...
