We've owned Vanagons for over 30 years and our three children all grew up in one.  I don't think I've ever heard of anyone tipping over in one.  We've had one accident in one in all that time and we were rear-ended by somebody - no damage, just pushed a little.  They're certainly "safer" than SUV's - especially due to the fact that they don't go as fast as the suv's.  When you stop and think about it, you don't see many accidents involving these cars - or, at least, I haven't in all those years.
