Subject: Headlight relay scheme - good or bad or just OK?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

Hi George and others,

I assume by your post (and what I've seen) that the stock Vanagon headlight fuses are located after the headlight switch. Does this mean that the headlight switch receives its power directly from the battery via the ignition switch and the starter cut-out relay? I would think that it would go through some sort of fuse first, but the Bentley shows none for my '85 at least.

This would seem to indicate that while most of the add-on headlight relay systems do not fuse protect the headlight switch, the factory arrangement doesn't protect it either. As you point out, the coils on add-on headlight relays also wouldn't be safe from overload. Although it would be nice to have a fuse in the power lead to the headlight switch, I'm guessing that the chance of it overloading is slight, especially if relays have been added to the headlights. Would you agree?

Thanks,

Alex
