Subject: '85 Vanagon GL No Interior Lights
Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed

Well this is my first question since working on the 85.

What should I check are there any known typical failure prone areas?

Since getting the Vanagon there have been no interior lights, clock didn't work, speedo is dead, battery was constantly failing. I have since replaced the battery(also found the drain), the entire instrument cluster(the stamped circuit was shot) with a newer model with a Tach '87 I think, replaced the speedometer cable, worked my way through the wiring using the Bentley(visual inspection only).

-One night I noticed that the dash lights other than the instrument cluster were on and adjustable by the dimmer on the switch. Have not seen them since. -The light that is near the glove box is MIA, wires are present. -The one above the driver's door does not work. -The ones that are on the cluster and the dash do not work.

The Bentley shows a red wire from one of the #30 terminals on the switch to the clock via #5 on the multi-connection terminal on the back of the instrument cluster. OK I have the red wire on the #5 on the multi-connector, but not on the other #30 on the switch.

Could this be connected some other place like behind the fuse panel?

Coinsidently IIRC the 87 Diagram shows this wire on the Tach.

Thanks,

Michael Knight '77 Westy Deluxe, "el Verde" '85 Vanagon GL
