Eric and Dave
Four years ago my (x) wife forced me (like it was a horse) to put my 84 into
retirement at my mom's farm (along side the 67 Sunbeam Alpine for the same
reason) It was that straw that broke the camel's back. While the marriage
didn't end right then, the resentment built to a crescendo, so one day I
grabbed the dog and said good bye.
Now I am single and happily driving a nice new 86 GL. Plus I still have the
84 for parts.
Her thing was that the VW and Sunbeam for that matter were eyesores and an
embarrassment to her to the kids and to the neighborhood. She never grew up
with a 53 Dodge Station Wagon (in the 70s) or a Humber Super Snipe. She is
the Ford Explorer type. Which she now happily drives. (until monthly fuel
and bank payment time)
In the end - she got the short end of the stick. It all makes me wonder if
there are not more deep seeded resentments going on here. Does she ever
tell you how much she loves the Vanagon. Does she ever fight with you over
the keys, or who is driving? Does she ever say - Hey - "Let's take the Van"
or "We were so lucky to find it." Sadly I am thinking not. You know.... -
you may be in trouble.
As for me, my new girlfriend - well she seems to like the van
okaaaaaaaay.......but......... Well I am still unsure about her. She voted
for George Bush.

Dave,
I feel for you. People who act on emotion like your
wife here, are disturbed. I've had to many people
like this in my life, and know that no matter what you
do, there fear will come back somewhere else. This
behavior will continue until they destroy everything
around them. The only solution is to get rid of your
wife. Better yet, if you don't want it to look like your
fault buy a ford explorer.
