Hi guys,
Karl, thank you for passing on my message!
And the rest of you, thanks for your interesting comments.
Jim, please, tell me WHERE that great Mexican food place was! There are a
trillion of them in San Antonio, I don't want to have to try them all in the
next three days to find that one! It wouldn't do a thing for the diet I
never stay on.
Oh, yeah, I guess you want to know about my van, eh? Well sorry, Eric, the
problem was not the starter switch. And my previous starting problem was a
loose connection in the starter box (is that what it's called? - black box
to the left of the engine with two plugs going into it)
Anyway, right after I phoned Karl to ask him to post my message, I phoned
the VW mechanic in Austin, who put me on to someone in San Antonio who does
house calls (or in my case downtown-parking-space-on-the-street calls).
With a few tests he determined that my starter was bad. We push started
Matilda, took her to the friendly folks at Buggy Warehouse, got a new-to-me
(remanufactured Bosch) starter, and Don the house-call-VW-mechanic replaced
it in their parking lot for an absurdly small amount of money. Now Matilda
works fine. Again. For as long as that will last!
Unfortunately it's rather freezing in San Antonio, but fortunately there's
plenty of places to camp for free, and a nice YMCA downtown with parking, so
I can stay for a few days as planned and go to the Y and even have showers.
Not too bad, but I hope it doesn't snow tomorrow as threatened!
As I write, I'm camped at a rest stop on I-10 just east of San Antonio - in
front of another Westy, though they are clearly closed up for the night so I
didn't knock to say "hi, Westy!" Is that anyone on the list? Air cooled
with California plates. Camping at rest stops is legal in Texas - it's so
crowded that I almost didn't get a space!
Joy
p.s. I've p-mailed those who replied to my email, since this won't get to
you from the listserv for a while - unless Tom actually logs in tomorrow and
makes good on his promise to stop screening my emails after 30 days.
