Allegedly the proper use of tow straps involves some back-up-and-run-for-it approach. A farmer friend of mine swears he's seen tractors unstuck by pickup trucks with this method. Mind you these are the 3" wide by 25 foot long tow straps and fastened on to VERY STRONG PARTS on each vehicle. It takes a lot of force to pull out a heavy tractor buried in mud to the axles!
